Is Herd Immunity Still Likely?

COVID Update – 8/19/2021
August 19, 2021COVID-19 was administered in America from three manufacturers: Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson. These vaccines were widely administered as America is now looking at over a 70% vaccination rate, shortly after Biden’s original goal of obtaining that by the 4th of July. COVID has had another surge around the world due to the Delta variant being resistant towards the vaccine. But still, even with the vaccine, your chances of getting sick are lower. You have an even lower chance of being hospitalized or dying from the vaccine. Recent reports have stated that there is a vaccine improvement being created by multiple organizations that will ideally resist against the delta variant too.
The number of vaccines being created is increasing around the world. Medical News Today states, “Currently, there are 138 candidate vaccines,” and continue on, “Today, there are 31 candidate vaccines in stage 3 clinical trials.” This is certainly hopeful news. Odds would suggest that there is likely one of these vaccines that can prevent against the variants. The issue is, the virus mutates so quickly that it is hard for scientists to keep up and ahead of the variants. It is unclear when the vaccines will be released, and each one most likely has a different time table, but if these are effective this could be really large news.
Vaccines are also under studies for the youth. It will be interesting to see how going back to in person classes will affect COVID cases amoung young people. The UK is now administering Moderna for youth ages 12-17 after studies should it to be tolerable and effective for that age group. Expect other countries to start following along with the UK.
