The COVID-19 Lambda Variant
August 5, 2021COVID has once again mutated into a new variant, the Delta Plus. South Korea has had two confirmed cases of the new variant, and it's fairly similar to the Delta variant. Reuters states, "The Delta Plus variant is a sub-lineage of the Delta variant first identified in India, and has acquired the spike protein mutation called K417N, which is also found in the Beta variant first identified in South Africa." This is not the news that anybody wanted to hear especially since we surpassed Biden's goal of 70% vaccination in America. Now the vaccines aren't immune to these new variants, but they still lessen the severity of the symptoms.

The Delta variant plus is not just in South Korea at the moment. According to Reuters, “Reports of Delta Plus cases have been few, and a handful of countries, including Britain, Portugal and India, have reported some cases.” The Delta variant quickly became the dominant strain of COVID, and it’ll be interesting to see how this new variant progresses throughout the world. Now that people are back traveling, at work, and going out and doing things with their friends, there’s a lot more reason to be worried about the virus setting. In fact, Florida recently had the most confirmed COVID cases in one day since the start of the Pandemic. This could largely be related to the Rolling Loud Music Festival that took place the weekend before.
There is now some worry that the variants will mutate to become resistant against the vaccine, which could very well put us back in square one if we are not careful. Another lockdown is not what anybody wants, but if cases continue to rise like this, I think that it would be hard to say it’s out of the question.
